Inner Space - The Cabinet

Exhibition design and curatorship
Lisbon Architecture Triennale Chiado Museum of Contemporary Arts, 2019

The exhibition Inner Space is part of an ongoing research project into the construction of the architectural imagination. It sets out to investigate the space between inner and outer reality, looking to identify the moments in which the two realms interact most vividly.
Inner Space regards the imagination, and more precisely, the architectural imagination, as the critical process that makes the interplay between the two realms to happen, possible, creating the potential for a space to be inhabited and explored in itself. We define imagination as the capacity to organise, structure and translate into other forms our own experience of the world. Such an experience may be direct, or it can be mediated by the encounter of a subject with imagery. Imagination is thus a mental faculty strictly connected to rationality, and the dialectical relationship between the two fields has been defined and theorised on by numerous philosophers and scientists over the centuries. Through Inner Space, we aim to bind the construction of the imagination with a parallel notion: the identification of imagination as an immersive territory that can be experienced, crossed and even inhabited.

The exhibition Inner Space identifies two parallel and closely interlinked movements involved in constructing architectural imagination: a collective one (”The Cabinet”), and an individual one (”The Denkraum”), with the two spheres complementing each other. In the section dedicated to the construction of imagination as a collective process, the works are presented on a tall wooden installation known as the “Cabinet” (of Curiosities). This installation synthesizes the historical transition from a private form of knowledge—the studiolo at the bottom—to the wunderkammer in the middle, and finally to exhibitions, museums, and public collections at the top. The “Cabinet” serves as a repository for the shared tools of architecture (formes, representation tools, materials and construction methods…) that both allowed and supported the formation of collective imagination. The design of this exhibition structure, shaped like a cabinet, itself evokes the historical evolution in the transmission of culture. It facilitates the organization of exhibited works, offering various levels of reading and perception.

A third section of the exhibition identifies how architectural imagination is capable of nourishing other disciplines: from art to videogames, virtual reality, comic books and forensic investigation.

	Inner Space - The Denkraum

The “Denkraum” is one of the key elements of the exhibition Inner Space and refers to a concept dear to the father of iconology, Aby Warburg: the "space of thought." In the exhibition, the “Denkraum” is a circular room within a square space that houses images collected or produced by three architects – Louis Sullivan, Aldo van Eyck, and Lina Bo Bardi – expressing a form of materialization of the images contained in their minds. Three windows visually connect these images within the “Denkraum” to projects by the architects displayed on the walls of the outer room.
A third section of the exhibition identifies how architectural imagination is capable of nourishing other disciplines: from art to videogames, virtual reality, comic books and forensic investigation.

	Databasee Network Interface
The Architecture of Information
Exhibition design and curatorshipArchizoom gallery at EPFL Lausanne, 2021

The exhibition Database, Network, Interface primarily draws on a selective survey of built, unbuilt and conceptual designs associated with selecting, ordering, transferring, preserving and accessing information. The case studies, also incorporating manifestations of architectural thought in other fields (literature, art, gaming, interaction design), belong to a broad timespan, from Antiquity to contemporary times and touch on very different conceptions and formalisations of the relationship between space and information. They have been chosen for their ability to exemplify specific ways a spatial system can promote access to information and embody paths and sequences, suggest potential links and ultimately guide users in their journey across content.

The exhibition design is guided by Ramon Llull’s Figura Plena, a figure consisting of a circle, a square and a triangle sharing the centre and having the same surface.
Eighteen wooden pieces of furniture on a regular array display the exhibition’s content. In plan, each one of them is shaped in one of three Llullian geometric figures: the circle, the equilateral triangle, and the square. These pieces of furniture are an allusion to and an abstraction of the fixtures traditionally connected to the access and organisation of information: tables, filing cabinets, libraries, shelves, pedestals, studies, etc. In the exhibition, the circle corresponds to the database, the triangle to the network and the square to the interface
Photos of the exhibition by Olivier Christinat and Solene Hoffmann.

A Poem That Demands Translation Into Architecture
Installation design and curatorship Exhibition “OK Computer: Languages of Order”
Sitterwerk Kunstbibliothek, St.Gallen, 2022-2023

“The exhibition Ok Computer: Languages of Order” brings together positions that deal with the topic of naming and organizing by means of language in various ways: from very personally developed strategies of order to technical utopias and attempts to have the computer write the vocabulary for the catalogue."

Our contribution proposes a hypothesis of spatialisation of content by establishing a series of visual and conceptual correspondences between twelve concrete poems and twelve architectural plans from Renaissance buildings.

The image schemas are the critical elements in this work, operating as connective devices between the plans and the poems and between spatial organisation and language. The image schemas are patterns for organising thought and developing language that unfold in every individual’s mind during infancy. They can be visualised and analysed in a diagrammatic way. Based on a bodily experience, an image schema stems from the human mind as a cognitive structure.

This installation creates a bridge between words (written language) and space to organise and retrieve content by connecting the notion of image schemas to concrete poetry and architectural plans. Whereas the former is a visual form of poetry where words and linguistic elements take specific spatial arrangements to construct poetic meaning, the latter are two-dimensional representations aimed to translate data organisation in space. The image schemas, visualised in a diagrammatic way, provide twelve general patterns that can define and explain the attributes of both poems and plans.
A small cabinet hosts the documents, its design is based on a series of image schemas.
Thanks to Roland Fruh and Barbara Biedermann for the invitation, and Catherine Heeb and Sitterwerk’s wood workshop for the fabrication.

	The Form of Form
Exhibition design and Curatorship
Lisbon Architecture Triennale, 2016

In 2016 we have been invited to reflect on a selection of examples drawn from our platform, Socks (www.socks-studio.com) for the main exhibition of 2016 Lisbon Architecture Triennale. A number of images emphasize the permanence of form and its ability to condense a set of values in the realm of the visible.

Functioning as a "conversation," the narrative of the exhibition has been developed around a number of spaces inspired by the architectural projects of Johnston Marklee, Nuno Brandão Costa, and Office KGDVS, responsible for designing the pavilions. Each of the spaces is designed to host selected content from the Socks database.

The language of architecture is explored through a selection of construction drawings, landscape interventions, urban plans, artistic research, and other elements. Originating from different periods in history and regions of the world, the content highlights what remains constant and what changes, thus identifying analogies and affinities in the creation of the built environment.

Organized around twelve interconnected rooms, each space integrating images related to a specific theme, the exhibition will define a continuous flow of works that are directly linked, either by affinity or opposition.

Off / The Grid Bab Al Bahrain public square / Infrastructure Competition 2011 - Finalist Project

Autonomous from the current urban development, the new Bab Al Bahrein square is a self-sustained island, a field for public life as reclaimed by citizens. No rhetorical monumentality, no arab decorative clichés give shape to its form. Conversely, the square asserts its nature as an infrastructural system using energetic autonomy to support public life and political freedom.

The energy obtained through a vast system of solar collectors on the roofs allows the square to be detached from the primary power grid, as electrical power is used on-site for multiple activities in the hollow pillars. Organized in a symbolical and physical grid of serial, simple, non-figurative elements, the place defines a mode of coexistence.
The whole area constitutes a meeting territory, integrating facilities for communication, public speaking and performing, a place for sharing, and evolutive activities for the entire population. The energy provides charge for an electric bike sharing system, computers, evening lighting, projecting devices, cooking facilities and so on, turning the square into a self-sustained system, an open frame to be filled with different meanings.
In a region where the landscape has been forced and artificially reinvented, natural elements are used here in a double way: as a serialized grid of trees acting as a buffer zone around the main square for it to be separated and connected at once with the neighbourhood, and as a net of grass and sand areas, hard surfaces and water basins, which dialogue with the technological structures to host different activities while evoking the regional landscape without nostalgia.
